Nancy Feth interviewed on WCVB TV/HD Channel 5 News, Boston, Nov. 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Read the Complete Transcript of a TV Interview with Life Coach Nancy Feth:  News Center 5 Eyeopener - Nov. 14, 2008 - Channel 5 TV

If you are an early riser, and tuned into the morning show at 6:00 am on WCVB TV/HD Channel 5, you may have caught a glimpse of Nancy Feth being interviewed by Bianca de la Garza live, with tips and strategies for managing the shift of economic uncertainty and job transitions. If not, here is a transcript of the conversation...

6:17 am

Bianca: We all know these are tough economic times, our economy has meant lots and lots of job cuts and many, in fact, are even bracing for the end of the year to see if they're even still employed.  So, can you secure your job?  Professional Coach, Nancy Feth says, "yes." She is waking up early with us this morning to give us some tips.  Thanks for being here.  So Nancy, let's get right to it, what do you need to do in this current economy?

Nancy:  Bianca, the most important thing you can do is really be grounded to yourself and look and see what is it that you are bringing as value to yourself and your organization.

Bianca: When you are talking about value are you talking about learning your strengths , "if I'm really good at this, do more of this?"

Nancy: Absolutely, and there's another way of looking at it too, it's not just your unique strengths that you bring to your current job, but it's also, what is it that you can re-create to make a new situation for yourself.

Bianca: And I think we're doing the full screen here, if we can put that up, so basically, you're talking about create value in yourself, but also invest in relationships.  What do you mean by that?

Screen:

Securing Your Job:

- Evaluate status and risk
- Create value
- Invest in relationships
- Create opportunity, take charge
- Be positive

Nancy: Most people that are out of work right now have had a good sense of what it means to be on a team, and to make a contribution, so you need to be thinking about that when you're going forward, in terms of the type of people, the type of environment, where you can really thrive.

Bianca: One thing you said is to "Create opportunity, take charge, be positive" all things that sound good, but that means maybe, possibly, taking on more of a workload?

Nancy: Actually, no.  It means connecting to yourself and getting really grounded before you go out there.  It's easy to go out and to say, "Ok, there's more that I have to do," but the reality is, it starts with us and the position that we put out there in the world.

Bianca: So, "get grounded."  I mean, I guess I'm trying to figure out what people can take from that, how do you do that?  What's the first step?

Nancy: First step is extreme self-care, I mean, what is it that gets you centered?  Working out?  Getting extra sleep?  I mean there's all kinds of things, it's different for everyone, but the bottom line is, it's kind of like in the airplane, where they say, "Put on your mask before you take care of your child" and you really do need to take care of yourself before you go out there.

Bianca: And, if you are laid off, sadly, that is the case for many people, and as we're coming into a holiday and alot of people are looking for jobs, how do you stand out from this competition because you're all looking now for, less jobs.

Nancy: Right.  Well, you look at how you can differentiate yourself, what are the unique gifts that you bring, what are the things that you do, that actually set you apart. So it can be...it can be the type of role you were in, but it's also re-thinking and re-creating yourself.

Bianca:  Recreating yourself!  All right, well great advice and hopefully we can all get grounded.  If you want more information just go to thebostonchannel.com, click on "asseenon5" and stay positive, even when it comes to...football...

David Brown: ...there you go, the Patriots hardly catch the Jets...I don't know how positive this is!
